Highlights and tour details

The road starts from the market square of Bardonecchia and travels for 26.5 km with an overall difference in altitude of about 1700 m. The first section, from Bardonecchia to the hamlet of Rochemolles, is paved for 6 km, which today is the SP 255 and this road on the left bank of the river was built by Military Engineering in 1939, after the dam and the basin were built upstream from the village. It is the third main attractor of tourist flows in the Valley when it comes to the use of high altitude roads.

The paved part is just 20% of the route and ends in Rochemolles. A wonderful "adventure road" that was boldly opened in 1962 starting from the Scarfiotti hut by the company VA.RO. Spa to serve the Hotel Mountain Hut and the ski lifts for summer skiing on the Sommeiller glacier, later closed in 1984 due to the withdrawal of the glacier.

NOTE: The best day for cycling enthusiasts is Thursday, when the road is closed to motorised traffic.
