SLOW & TASTE: discovering the region

Via del Mare Astigiano (Asti Sea Way): Stage 4 Castelnuovo Calcea - Montegrosso d'Asti

da Castelnuovo Calcea a Montegrosso d'Asti (12,30 km)
Highlights and tour details

Castelnuovo Calcea is a highly representative point of this territory, due to the presence of vineyards and the conformation of the hills sloping down towards the valley. Especially interesting is the layout of the farmsteads and their wine-producing facilities to the south-east of the town, where the La Court farmstead, where Michele Chiarlo's wine-producing company, has long been investing in the scenic values and uniqueness of this territory, organising art events, which see the presence of artists who combine their works with the landscape. The business of the farmstead is well documented through the website, which lists the initiatives and events that take the form of a series of events during the sumer that are very popular at regional and interregional level; an opportunity to meet and for many tourists to discover. The first historical information about Castelnuovo Calcea dates back to 1342 when the "castle" to which it owes its name was still present. The important strategic position of it and, consequently, of the town, meant that this territory was, over the centuries, subject to numerous clashes and changes of ownership between different families. Following a revolt of the inhabitants in the 17th century, the castle was set on fire. Today the remains of this building are the property of the municipality which, over the years, has started redevelopment works. The presence of the cultural centre "Angelo Brofferio" is also worth a mention. The stretch between Castelnuovo, Moncucco and Mombercelli is very varied and offers both the view of the vineyards and the wooded areas that are particularly charming for the tranquillity. Mombercelli, whose first news dates back to the Longobard period, is a town in which we can admire important works of art such as the parish church dedicated to S. Biagio, (1605), the town hall (late 19th century), the Civic Museum of Modern Art (MUSarMO) which includes works by representative artists of the Italian twentieth century and, finally, the Museo Storico della vite e del vino (Historical Museum of vines and wine). Continuing the stage, you go through the centre of Montaldo Scarampi reaching Montegrosso d'Asti, end of the stage and La Via del Mare itinerary, as well as the starting point of the Dalla Langa al Monferrato itinerary. At Montegrosso d'Asti, 240 metres, you can admire the historical centre of the town with its local peculiarities and above all the suggestive hilly landscape belonging to Val Tiglione, areas famous for the Barbera hills and for the events and activities connected to it. Therefore, you can easily reach the Castle of Montegrosso. Dating back to the 12th century, it is an example of how local historical culture and wine-making can merge and generate a centre of attraction of even greater importance. In fact, the castle, imposing for its size and the presence of two control towers, today houses a winemaking company and its wine cellar. During the year the town also holds some important food and wine events such as the Barbera Fair - the local predominant wine - in May, and the truffle fair in November.
