CIRCUITO DI SAN CARLO Stage 2: Falmenta - Cursolo

Valle Cannobina (12,00 km)
Highlights and tour details

From the hostel in Falmenta you cross the whole village in the direction of the church. Here you take the mule track on the left that crosses the upper part of the village and climbs up along the hillside towards Gurro flanking the southern side of Monte Riga. With a last, steeper stretch you reach Mergugna, cross the ridge and then descend to Gurro. From here, partly on a path and partly on road, you climb up to Piazza where a long stretch starts on the hillside in the thick woods of the valley, alternating several downhill and uphill stretches. The path is quite narrow with some exposed sections: be careful especially in autumn with the leaves. This long path leads to Daila and with a last stretch on a beautiful mule track you reach Provola. From here you can continue to Finero or it is recommended to take the old mule track to Ponte Creves which crosses the new access road to Provola several times until you reach the bridge over the Cannobino stream and climb up the Strada della Valle Cannobina in Creves. Continue on the carriage road for 350 m as far as the entrance of the tunnel, take the old road on the right (closed to cars) which leads to the monument in memory of the massacre of 12 October 1944 in which the partisan commanders Alfredo Di Dio and Attilio Moneta lost their lives. Continue until you come across the exit of the tunnel, then continue on the carriage road and at the exit of a further short tunnel, turn left on the road to Cursolo, which you follow until you reach the town centre (a municipal hostel is available).

Points of interest

The particularly fascinating territory of Valle Cannobina still preserves the unspoilt appearance of the past. The landscape is marked by the testimonies of traditional rural life, based on subsistence farming. The villages are characterised by unexpected views, ancient houses with votive paintings on the façades, small squares, rustic stone fountains, which can be discovered by walking along the narrow pedestrian streets. In the area of Daila, Provola and Ponte Creves you are inside the Valgrande National Park. In Gurro it is possible to visit the Geological Museum and the Ethnographic Museum of Gurro and the Valle Cannobina Valley which collects traditional objects and costumes of the Valley. The visitor itinerary is structured in environments that reconstruct the typical domestic contexts of the Valle Cannobina. In Gurro you can also admire the ancient "Casa San Carlo" where the Saint is believed to have slept during his pastoral journey in the valley.
