Highlights and tour details
The itinerary for expert hikers ALTA VIA DELLE VALI DI LANZO (AVL) is a high mountain crossing (2200-3200 m asl) which winds its way in the Alpi Graie Meridoniali, along the border between Italy and France, from the slopes of Levanna Orientale (3555 m) touching all the majestic peaks that reach 3500 m, to reach Rocciamelone (3538 m). The route covers 47 km (52 with the variant for Colle della Piccola), divided into six stages, and develops almost entirely on trail or traces of a trail appropriately signalled. Though not presenting particular mountaineering difficulties, the route is classified as EE (Expert Hikers) because of the severe high mountain environment in which it develops: this environment is even more difficult in weather conditions that are not optimal, and in the presence of snow or fog. Some sections of the route are particularly exposed and require good skills, sure step and absence of dizziness. Some have supports were possible. The hiker must take particular care to always check the conditions of functionality and stability of these supports before securing himself to them. Adequate preparation, suitable equipment and good physical training are required to tackle the itinerary. The departure can be from Forno Alpi Graie to the north travelling the itinerary southwards concluding at Malciaussia or in the opposite direction. In both cases, it is possible to interrupt the route through the connections to the valley from the intermediate stages, in particular halfway to Pian della Mussa. The stopover points are found in the refuges that are guarded in the summer and equipped with winter premises that are always open. In some, there are only bivouacs, and they are always open. The optimal period to tackle the route is from June to early September. The main attachment points are: to the north, the Village of Forno Alpi Graie in the municipality of Groscavallo, Malciaussia to the south in the municipality of Usseglio and the intermediate point of Pian Della Mussa in the municipality of Balme. All are approximately 60 km from Turin.
