Highlights and tour details

The Percorsi Occitani (Occitan Paths) are the most popular hiking circuit in Valle Maira. Designed in 15 stages, it goes from the plain of Villar San Costanzo to the mountain pastures of Elva, Prazzo and Acceglio; it returns on the opposite side passing Chialvetta, Gardetta, Marmora, Macra and Celle Macra. There is the possibility of shorter rings on the itinerary. Along the route there are refuges, stopover places and inns with typical Occitan dishes. The path is marked by wooden panels and yellow markings. The hiking circuit of the Occitan paths is included in the Paths category of the census initiated by the FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environmental Fund) to promote particularly special places that it would like to preserve for future generations. The itinerary of the Occitan Paths retraces the ancient mule tracks of the Valle Maira which connected the villages situated on the steep mountain slopes in the past. Along the route there are innumerable artistic and architectonic areas of the Romanesque and Gothic period dating back to the period of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, starting from the XII century and enhanced by the traditional Occitan culture present in three states (Italy, France, Spain).
