Highlights and tour details
From the center of Ornavasso cycle almost as far as the road bridge over the Rio San Carlo and then descend towards the sports field. From here there is a beautiful cycle walkway which crosses the River Toce and then turns right with a nice stretch of bike path on the left bank of the Toce. The setting is picturesque: the river banks have lush greenery and sometimes open into glades where the typical flowers of Lake Maggiore are cultivated.
In summer, many wild rabbits run into your path. You cross the junction for the sports field of Mergozzo and finally the cycle path ends near the former incinerator. From here, turn left to merge onto the provincial road from Mergozzo. Turn right and pay attention to the traffic, follow the asphalted road for about 500 m and then turn right to take a wide path that leads under the highway bridge where a network of natural base (dirt) cycle paths begins, of the Riserva Naturale Speciale del Canneto di Fondotoce (www.parcoticinolagomaggiore.it), a protected area at European level.
The cycle path continues along the River Toce up to the camp site of Fondotoce. Do not miss the short detour on the path (sign posted) for the beach. The track then continues alongside the reed thicket (it is worthwhile going to the observatory) and the canal that connects Lake Mergozzo with Lake Maggiore, and finally reaches the roundabout of Fondotoce and the Casa della Resistenza. From here, a cycle path on the side of the road leads to the Verbania Pallanza train station.
In Mergozzo at the Gelateria Gigi under the arcades, there is a bike rental station and e-bike charging station. Info Municipality of Mergozzo +39 0323 80101
