The giants between Italy and France
Ring tour by bike
4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
Description
The itinerary is a magnificent ring route between the Susa Valley, the Chisone Valley, the Briançonnais and the Maurienne, climbing the passes made legendary by the exploits of the cycling champions of every era: the Colle delle Finestre, the Sestriere, the Galibier - dear to Marco Pantani - and the Moncenisio.
A challenging itinerary, which will satisfy the most demanding cycling enthusiasts, not only from a sporting point of view: the citadel of Briançon, the Savoy forts of Aussois, the Roman city of Susa are just some of the points of historical and cultural interest along the route. And the landscapes are the imposing and marvellous ones of the Franco-Piedmontese Alps, nestled between the rolling valley floor and the harsh high mountain landscape of rocks and glaciers.
Schedule
Day 1
From Susa we will face the hard ascent of Colle delle Finestre, with the last 7 km of dirt road, for a taste of hard cycling that will be hard to forget. After descending into Val Chisone, we will gently go up to Sestriere, to then reach the Val Susa again and head to Bardonecchia for the evening, in the shadow of the Dolomite walls that surround the town, site of the 2006 Torino Olympic Games. Length 84 km, altitude difference 2,600 m.
Day 2
After crossing the Italian-French border after a few kilometres, we will face the spectacular hairpin bends of Colle della Scala and then descend to Nevache and, along the wonderful Val Clarée, reach Briançon and begin the long ascent towards the Lautaret and Galibier hills, with exceptional views of the Ecrins glaciers. Tired but happy, we will then reach Valloire for the evening. Length 86 km, altitude difference 2,000 m.
Day 3
A day of well-deserved rest is on the horizon: the thermal waters of Monetier les Bains await us, ensuring we will enjoy our holiday to the full ...
A few kilometres from Briancon we will enjoy a day of relaxation: the spa is just what we need to recover from the efforts of the first days and recharge our batteries for the grand finale!
Day 4
A gentle ascent will lead us to the Col du Télégraphe, before swooping down to Saint-Michel and taking the Haute Maurienne route. Near Modane we will deviate towards Aussois, a true paradise on a plateau overlooking the valley, and then go up to the Colle del Moncenisio, cycle along the splendid lake at over two thousand metres above sea level and descend back to Susa. Length 98 km, altitude difference 2,200 m.
